The tourist tax (Kurtaxe — also called overnight, guest or accommodation tax) is a per-person, per-night charge paid by overnight guests. It funds tourism infrastructure and is set by each municipality.
Who pays the tourist tax?
In principle every overnight guest. Children are reduced or fully exempt depending on the municipality, often with different age limits. As the host you collect the tax from your guests and pass it on to the municipality.
How much is it?
It varies widely by municipality — from a few centimes to several francs per person per night. The municipality where your property is located is always decisive. For a quick estimate, use the tourist-tax calculator.
Accounting for it correctly
- The tax is usually shown on top of the accommodation price.
- Report and remit it periodically as your municipality requires.
- Record the number of guests per stay cleanly — it is the basis of the calculation.
In CheckInShine the tourist tax is calculated from your bookings and shown per stay — no separate spreadsheet.
