Guest registration for holiday rentals

Which guest data you must record, how long to keep it, and how to meet the registration duty digitally and in a privacy-compliant way.

Updated: 2026-09-19

Many Swiss cantons and municipalities impose a registration duty: hosts must register overnight guests. The exact requirements (data scope, deadlines, reporting channel) are set by the municipality or canton.

Which data is recorded?

Typically name, home address, date of birth, nationality, and ID type and number. This data is particularly sensitive and may only be processed for the registration purpose and only for as long as necessary.

Retention & data protection
